FUNCTIONAL AND STYLISTIC TREND IN STUDYING PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS OF THE MODERN UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

Students’ stylistic skill – is the necessary condition of the high language culture. That’s why the secondary school course of the native language should include stylistics along with the language vocabulary and phraseology. In our opinion this makes the topic of the scientific paper urgent. In this respect the idea of studying phraseological units within their functional and stylistic aspects appears to be productive. Thus, studying phraseology, we find it useful to pay attention to the epistolary legacy of the Ukrainian classical authors of the XIX-XX centuries, which is interesting not only in its cultural and historical aspects but also in the linguistic ones. Ukrainian epistolary genre is represented by many different figures, each of which is unique and individual. The objective of our research is studying phraseological units within their functional and stylistic aspects on the basis of the epistolary texts of the Ukrainian classical authors. The task of the scientific paper is to deepen the knowledge of the epistolary style notion and substantiate the types of phraseological transformations, which authors use in their private correspondence. The problem of the phraseme transformations related to the certain stylistic task of the author has already been covered in linguistics (Y. Baran [1]; V. Bilinozhenko, І.Hnatiuk [2]; V. Chabanenko[6]; V. Mokienko [5], S. Hanzha [3, 4]). The researchers emphasize that all the ways of transforming phraseological units can be divided into two types: structural-semantic and semantic.Structural-semantic transformations include:- lexical replacement of the phraseological unit components by the free word combination;- extending the phraseological unit;- phraseological hint;- contamination of the phraseological unit;- ellipsis of the phraseological unit;- extended metaphor. Thus, we can conclude that the idea of studying phraseological units within their functional and stylistic aspects appears to be timely and requires thorough attention on the part of the language teachers.
