Abstract

The specifics of Ukrainian folklore studies of the late 1930-th and early 1940-th are described. Many pieces of folklore were falsified during this period. These are songs about the party, Stalin, «the bright future», collective Soviet farms. This folklore was not composed by the people but was recorded as folk. There were special people in villages, special poets who made it. Collectors of folklore were forced to record and publish them. Collections of folklore of this type and articles of scientists of those times are described. However, folklorists tried to publish authentic works as well.Big attention was paid to the folklore of the eastern regions of Ukraine. Many ethnic Russians lived there. Their folklore differed from Ukrainian. They wrote it in order to carry out cultural assimilation, to show that this is in fact Ukrainian folklore, to show that it does not differ from Russian. At the end of the 1930-th, folklore was also recorded and studied in the western regions of Ukraine. It was a part of the ideological program to demonstrate the cultural community of these territories with the Soviet Union. The pre-war and post-war folklore differed greatly in terms of content, ideology, and in terms of the authenticity of texts. The pro-Soviet, pro-Ukrainian and anti-Soviet folklore appeared during the Second World War. The authorities tried to stimulate the process of folklore creation and direct it to the propaganda channel. And in 1944 the process of collecting folklore from the Second World War was officially initiated. Despite all the difficulties, Ukrainian folklorists gave some ideologically unbiased collections of folklore, popularized authentic Ukrainian folklore, investigated it.
