Background. The times of independent Ukraine became a kind of springboard for comprehending / rethinking of the artistic and aesthetic style and value of the works of many talented artists, who were unfairly branded for various reasons by the ideological system of the former USSR, incriminating a number of «mortal» sins. Among such original authors of the era of the shot Renaissance a special place is given to Valerian Petrovych Pidmohylnyiy. He is a prose writer, translator, publicist, author of multifaceted works of «small» and «big» prose. A special place in the works of the writer occupiess his early story «Ostap Shaptala». Purpose is to investigate the originality of the artistic affiliation of the images-characters of the work «Ostap Shaptal» by V. Pidmohylnyiy to a certain type of personality. Methods: cultural-historical, biographical, psychological. Results. The state of the research of the poetics and aesthetics of V. Pidmohylnyiy, the interest to both the original and the translation palette of the artist is always on time for the specialists of different levels (starting from the difficult 20 – 30s of the last century). Literary critics show interest in the story «Ostap Shaptala». The article under consideration focuses on the images of a classic Ukrainian family: Ostap Shaptal, mortally ill with tuberculosis, 22-year-old Olyusa, and their elderly parents. The most expressive character traits and manners of all family members are revealed through Ostap's worldview. Parents and Olyusya are a kind of impetus to change in the psychology of the reflective protagonist, who is constantly «on the border» between desires and moral and ethical constants. It emphasizes the uncertainty, the dichotomy of the hero-martyr, the introvert and the narcissist Ostap Shaptala, who is a projection on the complexity of the day (in all senses) of the times of V. Pidmohylnyiy. It is a type of personality that fully embodies the drama and contradiction of the world during the Civil War and man in particular. Unstable psyche, polarity of views and feelings: from acceptance to denial mark the discomfort of the «I» of the character. In addition, the issue of the semantics of the name of the antisocial Ostap Shaptala is raised in the research. Olyusya is a type of the introvert (according to K. Jung), a victim, a depressed person who was ready for anything for the sake of her brother, his comfort and peace. Her portrait characteristics correlate with the spatial details-codes, which highlight the physical and mental state of the young person to some extent. The death of Olyusa's only daughter programmed a new lifestyle for the old Shaptals, who could not and did not want to accept it. Discussion. V. Pidmohylnyi's story «Ostap Shaptala» is a vivid example of the author's self-expression, a qualitative product of the cultural epoch of the early twentieth century, which preceded the existing artistic and aesthetic ideas about the individual, his inner world. Artistically developing the types of characters of the Shaptal family (which in different situations fall under a number of types), the author emphasized the classical oppositions, the problem of becoming the «I» of the individual, self-awareness and self-identification; on the problem of memory, parental love, forgiveness, sacrifice, etc.
